Young trans women of color are among the highest risk groups for HIV infection. Cultural stigmas, homelessness and a lack of positive trans role models push many of these young women into the sex industry and other destructive environments. Working with the Broadway Youth Center, a program of Howard Brown Health Center, we created a brochure booklet inviting these at-risk women to participate in TWISTA—the nation’s ground-breaking program for young trans women of color.
With so much emphasis placed on appearance and visual identity, it was incredibly important to the project that young women see themselves in the program’s leadership. To illustrate (and prove) the program was safe, fun and run entirely by young trans women of color, we art directed a high-end fashion shoot with the program’s directors—complete with hair, makeup, styling and studio setup.
